For generations, they had been known as a place of great abundance, rich in minerals, ores, and precious gems. But despite the abundance of resources, no village had ever succeeded in taking root within their rugged terrain. The mountains remained a place of great mystery and intrigue, with tales of lost treasures and ancient civilizations buried deep within their cavernous depths. But for all their riches and secrets, the mountains remained an enigma, unclaimed and unconquered by any who dared to try.~ [[Begin By Prospecting for Minerals ->Prospected-M]] [[Begin By Hunting for Food ->Food-M]] [[Begin By Building Housing ->Housing-M]]~The valley is a lush and fertile expanse of land, nestled between towering mountains and winding rivers. It is rich in natural resources, with an abundance of timber, fresh water, and arable land for farming. Despite these many advantages, however, no village has ever managed to establish a successful settlement in the valley. The steep cliffs and treacherous terrain surrounding the valley make transportation and communication into and out of the valley difficult, isolating it from the rest of the kingdom. Despite these challenges, it remains a place of great promise and potential, with untold riches waiting to be discovered by those with the courage and perseverance to unlock its secrets.~ [[Begin By Logging the Forest ->Logged-V]] [[Begin By Hunting For Food ->Food-V]] [[Begin By Building Housing ->Housing-V]]~The seaside is a place of great beauty and bounty, with shimmering waters and sandy beaches stretching out as far as the eye could see. It is also known for its rich resources, with an abundance of fish, shellfish, and other seafood. However, despite its many advantages, no village has ever been able to establish a successful settlement in the area. The harsh storms and unpredictable tides make fishing and sailing treacherous, while the shifting sands and rocky terrain may prove difficult to cultivate. The seaside remains a place of great potential and untapped wealth, but it will require a special kind of vision and determination to unlock its secrets and establish a thriving community.~ [[Begin By Diving for Pearls ->Diving-S]] [[Begin By Fishing for Food ->Food-S]] [[Begin By Building Housing ->Housing-S]](if:visits is 1)[Your villagers have found some very promising seams of ore.] (if:visits is 2)[Full mining operations have begun, there is no shortage of work to be done.](if:visits is 3)[The mountains' riches seem to have no end, our wealth rivals the King's. [[Search Deeper->Balrog Chambers]] The hunter's tracks led back to the Bear cave. The cave leads further into the mountain . . . [[Search Deeper->Balrog Chambers]] After hours of searching the village guards have stumbled upon a mysterious stone crypt deep beneath the mountain. As they explored the dark and musty tunnels, they discovered that the walls were adorned with glittering gemstones of every color, and it became clear that a Balrog had taken up residence within this ancient chamber. With weapons at the ready, the guards braced themselves for the worst as they cautiously approached the creature's lair. [[Engage the demon->Attack-M]] [[This foe is beyond our strength->Collapse]] The Balrog emerged from the shadows with a deafening roar, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly flame. The guards struggled to their feet, only to find themselves hopelessly outmatched by the ancient demon. One by one, they fell before the creature's might. In a matter of minutes, the Balrog had defeated the guards with terrifying ease, leaving nothing but destruction and despair in its wake. [[What about the village?->Surprise-M]]They quickly realized that their weapons and bravery would be no match for the ancient demon's terrifying power. In a desperate move, the guards decided to collapse the cave onto the crypt instead of confronting the Balrog head-on. Using their weapons, they began to hack away at the supporting pillars, causing the entire chamber to shake and rumble. The Balrog, sensing the danger, let out a deafening roar as it charged towards the guards. But it was too late. The cave collapsed in on itself, burying the crypt and the Balrog beneath tons of rubble and earth. The guards breathed a sigh of relief, hoping that they had succeeded in banishing the creature. The villagers who have participated in the rituals have likely been corrupted and transformed by the fish-men, and they are no longer the same people they once were. [[At Least That's What the Guards Tell Themselves->Attack the Villagers II-S]]The fish-men themselves are a grotesque and unsettling sight. They move with a sluggishness that suggests they are more at home in the water than on land, and their eyes glow with a sinister light. Those who have encountered fish-men report that they are powerful fighters, with sharp claws and teeth that can tear through flesh and bone. They seem to be impervious to pain, and can continue fighting even after suffering grievous injuries. The villagers were caught unprepared for the creature's assault. They tried to defend themselves with whatever weapons they could find, but their efforts were futile against the creature's thick scales and powerful attacks. Buildings were destroyed, crops were trampled, and many lives were lost. The guards who had retreated and allowed the fish-men to complete their ritual felt a great sense of guilt and shame as they watched the creature wreak havoc on the village. However, the villagers are completely under the control of the fish-men, and their attempts at reasoning fell on deaf ears. The guards have no choice but to use force, focusing their attacks on the villagers striking them down as quickly as possible. The battle is intense, with the fish-men and the mind-controlled villagers fighting back with all their might. The guards were outnumbered, but they fought bravely, determined to stop the ritual from being completed. As the last villager fell, the fishmen retreated into the waters deeper in the caves. The guards knew that the battle was not over, and that they needed to remain vigilant to prevent the fish-men from regaining control over more villagers. [[Now to Deal With the Statue->Statue-S]]The guards fought bravely, but they were greatly outnumbered, and their weapons seemed ineffective against the tough, scaly hides of the fish-men. They were too strong and too numerous, and their mind-control powers made it impossible for the guards to mount an effective defense. The villagers, still under the control of the fish-men, attacked the guards with a frenzied zeal. They were the deciding factor, unwilling to harm the villagers, the guards were forced to retreat. [[Unfortunate->Return-S]] Surrounded by blood and the bodies of their friends, the guards look upon the fossil statue. An argument breaks out among them, what to do with it. . . A voice within them reels against this choice and promises retribution. . . [[Hide the Fossil Statue->Hide]] The guards could also choose to hide the fossil statue in a remote location where it could never be found or used in any ritual again. But it could risk being discovered and used again in the future. They hear bubbles in the pools in the back of the cave. . . The remaining guards encircle the captain, their backs to him, swords at the ready. They fight with every remaining breath, buying every second they can for him to complete his task. As each guard falls, the circle shrinks, with only seconds remaining the captain puts every ounce of his strength into his swing. The axe finds purchase and destroys the creature's legs! Collapsing from the exhaustion the last sounds any of them heard were the wails of the fishmen. [[The Fishmen Weren't Heard From Again->End]] Quickly approaching the statue each guard attempts to wrench free bones from the statue. They soon realize that it is much more difficult than they had anticipated. The statue is much larger and heavier than they had expected, and they find iron pins at each joint holding the statue together. Using their weapons to pry free a single bone each the guards retreat as quickly as they can, not everyone makes it out of the cave. Reaching the relative safety of the beach they resolve to take their individual pieces to various locations hoping to delay the inevitable. The fishmen will surely regroup and return, and the guards will have to face them again. None in Years Now Have Seen a Fishman or Heard Their Dark Voices in Their Mind.
